MANILA — Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino announced on Tuesday a wage increase of P85 per day in Metro Manila.He said 1.1 million minimum wage earners will benefit from this &quot;historic&quot; increase. Under the Wage Order NCR-27, the increase will be done in two tranches: the first tranche of P60 will be effective by July 19, while the second tranche of P25 will be effective by January 20, 2027.Once fully implemented, the minimum wage in Metro Manila will increase from P695 to P780 per day for non-agricultural workers, while P658 to P743 for agricultural workers.Tolentino said this is a historic wage hike, as it surpassed the P50 increase implemented last year.&quot;Since 2023, ang naging increase na sa Metro Manila, ay P210. Itong P85 ang pinakamalaki sa kasaysayan ng Metro Manila,&quot; Tolentino said.For minimum wage earners working 5 times a week, the hike will mean an increase of P1,892 per month, and will set the minimum monthly wage to P17,204.63.For those working six days a week, their monthly pay will reach P20,631.79.The labor chief said lengthy consultations were held with employers to ensure this will be implemented.&quot;Mahabang consultation ito with the employers, kasama rin po yung mga nangyaring kaguluhan sa Middle East, pagtaas ng inflation, yung pangangailangan ng ating mga manggagawa sa Metro Manila na maka-adjust ang kanilang kakayahan para makahabol yung purchasing power ng kanilang kinikita,&quot; he added.&quot;It reflects the real wages, the adjustment will reflect the real wage earned by minimum wage earners to enable them to live a life in a metropolitan area, such as Metro Manila,&quot; he said.He said wage hikes for workers in the provinces are already in the pipeline.&quot;Ongoing lahat yan. Siguro mauuna ang Region 4A, Region 3, at Cebu,&quot; he added.Tolentino admitted that the wage hike met some opposition, especially from small employers, who might not be able to afford the increase.&quot;Siyempre may mag-o-oppose, lalong-lalo na yung maliliit, pero ang kailangan natin ngayon ay bigyan din ng proteksyon yung manggagawang Pilipino na may mga pamilya, na may malaking gastusin, lahat naman ito ay mababalanse sa productivity ng mga manggagawa,&quot; he said.DOLE says retail and service establishments regularly employing less than 10 workers and those affected by calamities or human-induced disasters may apply for exemption from the implementation of the wage order.Those already registered as Barangay Micro Business Enterprises will be automatically exempt under Republic Act 9178.National Wages and Productivity Commission Executive Director Criselda Sy said they are expecting &#x27;shocks&#x27; with the order, but says these are all manageable.Akbayan Representative Perci Cendaña welcomed the move, saying it is a “good step but it should be the first step.” “This must be bolstered by a legislated wage hike to fully allow our workers to survive the onslaught of price increases,” he said. “Kulang pa rin ito para i-recover ang na-erode na income ng ating mga manggagawa,” he added. He also noted that wage hikes must be extended across the country. “Filipino workers face the same price increases [wherever] they may be,” he said.
