MANILA (UPDATE) — The Department of Energy has launched an urgent safety assessment of its energy infrastructure following a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern province of Sarangani, officials said Monday.The National Grid Corp of the Philippines also said it is assessing possible damage from the powerful quake.Following a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to inspect critical facilities, the DOE said it has activated its disaster response protocols to determine the extent of the damage.The agency&#x27;s Task Force on Energy Resiliency has &quot;activated coordination with electric cooperatives, distribution utilities, and oil industry stakeholders to assess the impact of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on energy facilities in Sarangani and nearby areas,&quot; the DOE said in a statement.Teams are currently inspecting power grids and fuel networks across the affected region.&quot;The DOE is currently consolidating reports on the condition of power lines, substations, distribution facilities, fuel depots, retail stations, and other energy infrastructure to determine whether any facilities have been affected,&quot; the statement added.Authorities said that &quot;continuous monitoring is also being conducted to ensure the uninterrupted supply of electricity and petroleum products in affected communities.&quot;The country&#x27;s power grid operator said it is also still assessing the extent of the damage in Southwestern Mindanao.The NGCP said power transmission services in Sarangani, including General Santos City, are still out. Power transmission, meanwhile, has been fully restored in Maguindanano, North Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat at 8:33 a.m., and partially restored in South Cotabato at 10:22 a.m. Services in Davao Del Sur, Davao Occidental, Davao De Oro, Davao Oriental were been restored at 8:20 a.m.The 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Maasim town in Sarangani at 7:37 a.m. on Monday, state seismology agency Phivolcs said in a second advisory, prompting it to issue a tsunami alert.The country is regularly hit by quakes due to its location on the Pacific &quot;Ring of Fire.&quot;
