MANILA — The Department of Energy is now concentrating on providing electricity in Mindanao as part of the government’s push for full household electrification by 2028.“Sobrang bilis nating manganak eh no, hindi na mahabol ng linya natin. [laughs] But we are in a good place, we are at 94.9 percent energized na. Pero ‘yung 5 percent ‘yung hinahabol palagi kasi ‘yung growth rate is also fast,” Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said in an interview with state-run media PTV Thursday, July 16.Garin noted that they are focusing electrification efforts in Mindanao as it needs “better connections and more energization”.“We’re concentrating more on Mindanao now kasi Mindanao is lower than Visayas and Luzon at para lang may parity rin ‘no,” she said.In reaching geographically isolated areas, Garin said they are “becoming more creative” in providing power solutions to reduce cost.“We deploy parang itong itsura niya parang container na may nakakabit na solar, mayroong battery at mayroong diesel kung anumang gas din na turbina,” she noted.“And then we also deploy for individual houses, meron silang binibigay na mga solar panels na may kasamang bombilya, at radio,” Garin added.The energy chief hopes they can cover more areas, saying that “every island or every community needs its unique solution.”“Hindi ‘yun yung i-connect nating lahat. There has to be a better solution than just connecting,” she said.“Kasi minsan sobrang layo, minsan 20 kilometers away from the tapping point, eh medyo sayang din ‘yung gastos so might as well find another solution that will be fitting to that community,” Garin added.During his fourth State of the Nation Address, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed the energy department and the National Electrification Administration to power the remaining 2.6 million households in the country before his term ends.
