The June 2026 average rate put the Philippines on top, even higher than Singapore&#x27;s average residential rate of P12.34/kWh.</p><p>Energy Undersecretary Rowena Guevara explained that the spike in electricity rates was due to higher demand during hotter weather and a series of yellow alerts in Visayas, after some power plants shut down unplanned.</p><p>&quot;For example, sa Visayas, siya talaga ang pinakamahal, kasi may kakulangan tayo doon. Meron tayong 21 plants na naka-forced outage; therefore, dependent talaga siya sa Luzon and Mindanao for imported power. Alam nyo naman naka yellow alert sila palagi,&quot; Guevara said.</p><p>&quot;Meron din kasi tayong matataas na demand, during the summer and therefore we have to operate the more expensive power plants, imbes na blackout eh paandarin na lang yung medyo mahal na plants,&quot; she added.</p><p>In recent weeks, some electric cooperatives have posted steep increases due to a thinning electricity reserve.</p><p>According to Guevara, the Philippines&#x27; posting the highest power rate is only for June, and the government will again conduct a survey, the results of which will be out by July 26, 2026.</p><p>Before this, many ordinary consumers and <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/6/19/meralco-responds-to-viral-complaint-about-p90k-electric-bill-1721" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">even celebrities</a> had posted their bloated electric bills and questioned various charges paid by consumers.</p><p>Electricity inflation climbed to 12 percent in June, the highest in almost 3 years, National Statistician Claire Dennis Mapa said.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/7/7/inflation-eases-to-6-4-percent-in-june-as-fuel-prices-decline-0914" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Inflation eases to 6.4 percent in June as fuel prices decline</a></div>
