MANILA — The Philippines&#x27; gross international reserves (GIR) rose to $104.7 billion as of end-June 2026, bolstered by government deposits and central bank investment income, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) announced.The foreign exchange buffer remains adequate to cover 6.8 months&#x27; worth of imports of goods, services, and primary income, while providing roughly 3.7 times the country&#x27;s short-term external debt based on residual maturity, the BSP said.According to the central bank, the increase in reserves was driven primarily by net foreign currency deposits by the national government with the BSP and net income generated from the central bank&#x27;s overseas investments. These gains were partially offset by downward valuation adjustments in gold holdings and foreign currency assets, alongside government debt servicing.Meanwhile, the country&#x27;s overall balance of payments (BOP) posted a $3.4-billion surplus in June, helping narrow the cumulative deficit for the first half of the year to $3.9 billion, down from $7.3 billion recorded through May.The BSP attributed the year-to-date deficit to an ongoing trade-in-goods gap and foreign portfolio investment outflows, which were partially cushioned by steady overseas Filipino remittances, foreign government borrowing, services trade, and foreign direct investment.
