President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. conducted an aerial inspection of the Malampaya Phase 4 Project on Thursday. The gas project, located off the waters of Palawan, is part of the administration’s push for energy security by boosting domestic natural gas production and reducing dependence on imported energy sources. The fly-by was part of the president’s activities in Palawan that day.The Malampaya Phase 4 Project has three new wells in development: the Malampaya East-1 (MAE-1), Camago-3, and Bagong Pag-asa-1.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/3/26/new-malampaya-wells-eyed-to-deliver-first-gas-by-q4-2019">New Malampaya wells eyed to deliver first gas by Q4</a></div>In January, Marcos announced a “significant natural gas discovery” in the MAE-1 containing around 98 billion cubic feet of gas in place, which is expected to strengthen the country’s domestic gas supply. Last March, the chief executive said Camago-3, which is part of the $893 million Malampaya Phase 4 Drilling Campaign, was “successfully drilled and tested”.It is estimated to have 2.5 times more recoverable gas than the Malampaya East-1 discovery.The government hopes to two wells can begin gas production by the fourth quarter of 2026, while preparations continue for the Bagong Pag-asa-1 well drilling. <div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/1/19/marcos-significant-natural-gas-discovery-made-in-malampaya-to-strengthen-ph-s-power-supply-0848">Marcos: ‘Significant’ natural gas discovery made in Malampaya, to strengthen PH’s power supply</a></div>Citing the energy department, the Presidential Communications Office said the newly discovered reserves are equivalent to about 31.46 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity — enough to power an estimated 13.11 million households for one year.It added that the MAE-1 and Camago-3 wells drilling is also expected to extend the Malampaya gas field’s years of productivity from 2027 to 2034.
