MANILA — The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) said it recorded an 89 percent growth in its solar financing portfolio in 2025. BPI said the growth was driven by rising demand among Filipino homeowners seeking to hedge against high electricity costs through rooftop solar installations.The surge comes just a year after the lender introduced its Solar Mortgage product under the BPI Green Solutions umbrella in 2024. The program allows borrowers to finance solar energy systems using their real estate property or top up existing housing loans to cover installation expenses under a single account.“We are seeing a significant surge in consumer interest toward solar energy, directly reflected in the rising demand for specialized green financing solutions,” said Dex Cuajotor, Head of Retail Lending and Bancassurance at BPI. “This market shift validates our commitment to empowering Filipino households with accessible financial options as they transition toward more sustainable and cost-effective energy alternatives.”BPI said its portfolio growth aligns with broader national trends. The Ayala-led lender cited data from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) showing that over 22,000 customers across the Philippines have integrated solar systems into the grid via the government’s net metering program.To lower the barrier to adoption, the bank said it is offering zero cash-out options for qualified applicants alongside promotional housing loan fixed rates starting at 5.99 percent for the first year, free property appraisal, and up to P50,000 in waived bank fees.President Ferdinand Marcos Jr is pushing for greater adoption of rooftop solar by pushing for the Sariling Kuryente Act, which is meant to lower the cost of installing and operating home solar power systems.
