BIR extends tax filing for areas hit by habagat

MANILA — The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has extended tax filing and payment deadlines for areas battered by the Southwest monsoon or habagat, offering relief to taxpayers affected by torrential rains.Deadlines falling between August 10 and 16 have been pushed to August 17 without penalties, the bureau announced on Monday. The extension covers 58 BIR offices, including 53 regular revenue district offices and five large taxpayer divisions.&quot;We recognize the difficulties brought about by the prevailing weather conditions,&quot; Internal Revenue Commissioner Charlito Martin Mendoza said in a statement. &quot;We are giving our affected taxpayers additional time so they can prioritize their safety this week and comply with their tax obligations without having to worry about penalties.&quot;The agency has instructed its authorized agent banks to accept returns and remittances during the extended period without imposing standard surcharges. The relief applies to both electronic and manual filing channels.The deadline adjustment follows a directive from the Office of the President implementing work-from-home arrangements for government offices in Metro Manila and 15 surrounding provinces on Monday.
