MANILA -- The Visayas grid will be on Red and Yellow Alert again on Wednesday, August 19.The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said the schedule is as follows:Red Alert 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.Yellow Alert 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.The NGCP said available grid capacity is 2,481 MW, but peak demand might reach the same amount.A red alert status is issued when the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulatory requirements. A yellow alert, meanwhile, means plants are producing less than the grid&#x27;s contingency requirement.The agency said two of Visayas&#x27; large coal power plants, Therma Visayas Inc. 1 and 2, are out. There are also lower power imports from Mindanao due to higher demand there. Some plants are also out in Mindanao.The NGCP said 11 plants have been out since August, while 1 plant has been out since July. Three have been out since June, 7 since May, and one since March.The Department of Energy has said that power consumers in Visayas and Mindanao will face higher electricity rates as these areas’ power grids continue to grapple with supply shortages.
