MANILA — The Philippine peso hit a record low of P61.888 against the US dollar on Tuesday, August 27.Before this, the peso&#x27;s lowest recorded close against the dollar was <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/7/24/peso-continues-to-weaken-sinks-to-new-low-in-intraday-trading-1146" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">P61.847</a> versus the greenback on July 24.On August 19, the peso touched a new intraday low of <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/8/19/peso-touches-new-historic-low-in-intraday-trading-1633" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">P61.995</a> per dollar during intraday trading, before clawing to close at P61.815. A weakening peso complicates the task of economic managers, as it makes imports of commodities like oil more expensive, which can push up inflation. Families of OFWs may initially benefit from a stronger dollar, as they can get more pesos for every dollar sent. However, inflation will also eat into their purchasing power.  The Bangko Sentral raised interest rates by 25 basis points to 5 percent, noting that oil prices remain volatile despite easing headline inflation.<div>More details to follow.</div>
