Santol in Quezon City on January 4, 2024. <em>Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News/File</em></span></span></span>LAGUNA — The municipality of Calauan is appealing to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for support to fast-track a proposed P1.2-billion waste-to-energy plant in Barangay Imok, aiming to become a pioneer in addressing the country’s mounting garbage crisis while generating electricity.</div><p>Mayor Roseller Caratihan said Calauan is ready to lead the nation in adopting the technology, which the President highlighted as a major solution to the garbage problem in his State of the Nation Address in July.</p><p>&quot;Kami na po &#x27;yung may unang-unang programa dito na nakagawa na po ng economy code para sa waste-to-energy. Open po ang aming bayan para sa waste-to-energy, at nandito na po &#x27;yung pasilidad na puwede naming ipagmalaki sa inyo na pwedeng magamit,&quot; the mayor said.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/8/13/energy-dept-eyes-generating-up-to-400-mw-via-trash-burning-plants-1436">Energy dept eyes generating up to 400 MW via trash-burning plants</a></div><p>The proposed Calauan Waste-to-Energy Plant will be built on a five-hectare site inside the 84-hectare Imok Integrated Eco-Industrial Park, a planned development that will also feature industrial parks, housing projects, and public green spaces.</p><p>The project can be completed within 15 months once construction begins.</p><p>According to Caratihan, Calauan has secured nearly all required permits, with approval from the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) remaining as the final hurdle. </p><p>The Sangguniang Bayan of Calauan has already passed Municipal Ordinance No. 03-12-2026, granting the project’s development permit.</p><p>Once operational, the facility is expected to process between 500 and 1,000 tons of waste daily while generating between 10 and 12 megawatts of electricity — potentially reaching up to 240 megawatt-hours of daily output.</p><p>Addressing environmental concerns, Caratihan assured residents that the project has undergone public consultations and complies with strict emission standards, leaving minimal residue and no foul odor.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/8/13/-dangerous-costly-misstep-environmental-group-opposes-marcos-waste-to-energy-plans-1506">‘Dangerous, costly misstep’: Environmental group opposes Marcos’ waste-to-energy plans</a></div><p>Plans for the facility were already underway before the President’s SONA.
