<p>MANILA &mdash; &nbsp;Inflation in August slowed from the previous month, the Philippine Statistics Authority said on Friday.&nbsp;</p><p>Headline inflation reached 6.1 percent in August, slower than the 6.2 percent clip in July, the PSA said.&nbsp;</p><p>The state statistics bureau said food inflation slowed to 4.6 percent in August, from 5.2 percent in July. Inflation for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels also eased to 7.9 percent, from 8.2 percent the month before.</p><p>The August figure brings the average inflation for January to August 2026 to 5.2 percent. Inflation soared to 7.2 percent in April, but has been going down since then. Still, National Statistician Claire Dennis Mapa said there are items that might still bring inflation up in the coming months.</p><p>Mapa noted, in particular, that rice inflation jumped to 19.4 percent, the highest since the 20.9 percent recorded in July 2024.</p><p>&ldquo;If you notice, doon sa ating bottom 30 percent income households, wherein the rice consumption is quite substantial, 8.2 percent yung ating inflation rate doon and rice is 3 percentage points,&rdquo; he said.</p><p>&ldquo;Rice is really contributing [a] substantial percentage of the overall inflation,&rdquo; Mapa said.</p><p>He also noted that vegetable prices may increase in September after storms battered parts of the country.</p><p>&ldquo;Our provincial offices reported na may parang may nakita silang pagtaas ng presyo ng vegetables particularly during the last week nitong buwan ng August,&rdquo; he said.</p><p>High fuel prices may still drive transport and electricity costs upward, the state statistician noted.</p><p>The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) hiked interest rates again in its last policy-setting meeting last month, citing the persistent threat of rising oil prices on the country&#39;s inflation rate.&nbsp;</p><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><em>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;</em></div>
