<p>MANILA &mdash; The peso hit a new record low of P62.59 against the dollar on Friday.</p><p>It closed at a previous record low of <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/9/2/peso-hits-new-all-time-low-of-p62-65-vs-dollar-during-intraday-trading-1041">P62.565</a> against the dollar on September 2.</p><p>On Friday, it hit P62.65 against the greenback in intraday trading, before clawing back to P62.59 at the close of trade.</p><p><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/9/3/palace-ph-focuses-on-fiscal-discipline-high-impact-projects-as-peso-tumbles-vs-us-dollar-1550" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">A Palace official</a> earlier said that the government was &ldquo;focused on fiscal discipline and more efficient use of public funds&rdquo; as the peso continued to slip against the US dollar.&nbsp;</p><p>&ldquo;This means reviewing spending proposals carefully and prioritizing programs that have high economic and social returns,&rdquo; said Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro.</p><p>Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Eli Remolona earlier said that the central bank was monitoring the foreign exchange market, after the currency breached the P62 barrier last week.&nbsp;</p><p>Analysts have warned that the weakening peso, coupled with rising world oil prices, may stoke inflation&nbsp;</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/9/4/what-happens-to-the-peso-if-more-filipinos-start-holding-their-dollars-1132">What happens to the peso if more Filipinos start holding their dollars?</a></div><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Xqc_jkQDD70?&wmode=opaque&rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br></div>
