The Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) has recorded a total of 10 cases of monkeypox (mpox) in the province of South Cotabato as of May 22.

The mpox cases have been reported in the municipalities of Tboli (4), Surallah (2), Banga (1), Tantangan (1), Lake Sebu (1), and Koronadal City (1).

Eldon Hans Serame, the health education and promotion officer of IPHO-South Cotabato, said the increase in mpox cases reflects the province’s vigilance and awareness.

"So, kung mayroon tayong kaso na ma-detect o ma-capture, ma-isolate, this is because ang ating surveillance system in the province is very active, also, ang ating mga contact tracing efforts," he said.

The IPHO said efforts are being intensified to monitor and trace individuals who have had direct contact with confirmed patients.

Serame added that since there is currently no specific treatment for mpox, their focus is on managing the symptoms until the patient recovers.

"The moment na nakita sa ating surveillance units na may symptoms, ina-isolate na sila agad, even in the absence of a confirmatory testing yet, ina-isolate na natin sila para ma-test na natin at makunan ng specimen, at mag-umpisa agad ang contact tracing," he said.

Dr. Conrado Braña of the Integrated Provincial Health Office said that they are continuing to investigate the transmission of the virus, as some cases have no history of travel.

He also clarified that mpox is not a new COVID-19 as it is more manageable. The minimum health standards practiced during the pandemic have also contributed to increased awareness and protection against mpox.

"Naunahan na nain ng information dissemination dati before pa tayo magka-kaso ng mpox. That is why, ito ang naging rason na naging vigilant ang mga tao, na everytime may makita silang sintomas na tulad nito ay nagpapa-check up agad sila sa doktor," Braña said.

Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It typically presents with symptoms such as fever, headache, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle aches. The virus spreads primarily through close contact, including skin-to-skin contact, exposure to body fluids, or respiratory droplets.
