The City Health Office of Davao on Friday reported a total of six confirmed monkeypox cases since April, as it advised the public not to worry excessively but remain cautious against the virus.

Dr. Sofia Corazon Zafra of the Davao City Health Office said that among the cases are the two recorded last month, one of whom died due to complications.

"They are in stable condition and are not in critical condition. We will continue to monitor them closely," Zafra said in a government-owned radio station, Davao City Disaster Radio.

She mentioned that even the patients' close contacts are being monitored closely; however, no symptoms have manifested so far.

Wearing face masks in Davao City is still voluntary, despite the mandatory face mask regulations in neighboring areas such as Davao del Sur and Compostela in Davao de Oro.

FACE MASKS BOUGHT IN BULK

Some individuals were seen buying face masks in bulk starting Thursday, following the enforcement of strict health protocols in neighboring areas.

Cornelius Corsame, a content creator, shared a video of people rushing to buy face masks in Uyanguren, Davao City, which is known for selling these items at lower prices.

He noted that most individuals intend to sell the face masks, while some bought them for personal use. He has also started wearing a face mask in crowded places.

However, the City Health Office stated that there is no need for panic buying of face masks, as monkeypox is not airborne. Its mode of transmission is through intimate close contact or skin-to-skin contact.

"They should not panic, as there are still measures we can take to prevent the spread of monkeypox. Additionally, there is still no increased risk. I hope there will be no panic buying," Zafra said.

Zafra advised that people may still choose to wear face masks amid changing weather conditions during this flu season.
