MANILA — There is a “slight increase” in the number of mpox cases in the Philippines, but the figures remain lower compared to the incidents last year, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Saturday.

The DOH did not provide current numbers, but in May 2025, the agency confirmed that the Philippines has listed a total of 911 cases since 2024.

“There is a slight increase of cases in some LGUs (local government units) but it is not higher than last year,” Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa told reporters.

“Mas mataas pa din yung number of cases na nakita namin last year,” he said.

“We’re increasing our campaigns on education and treatment and isolation para hindi siya kumalat at dumami pa,” he added.

Herbosa did not mention which areas registered the new mpox cases that were recently listed, but noted that the Philippines remains under “Clade 2,” which is considered less severe than the so-called “Clade 1” type.

“We are not part of the public health emergency of concern. That’s for Clade 1,” he said.

“Clade 2 is self-limiting,” he added.

Earlier this week, the World Health Organization (WHO) retained its highest alert level against the mpox as its outbreak across the world “continues to meet the criteria of public health emergency of international concern.”
