MANILA — Following the Department of Health’s statement that it expects a rise in incidents of dengue infections in the second half of the year, measures to stop the proliferation of dengue-carrying mosquitoes in schools have become even more important.

This, as the commencement of the school year coincides yet again with the rainy season.

Data from the DOH show that since January, almost 124,000 dengue infections have been logged in the country. Of this number, over 27,000 are children aged between five to nine years.

While the dengue situation remains manageable, the agency notes a six percent increase in cases (6,720) from May 11 to 24 compared to the weeks of April 27 to May 10 (6,192).

Deaths from the vector-borne disease remains low at 0.4 percent or four out of every 1,000 patients.

Students at the Antipolo National High School, with guidance from the DOH and Department of Education, took it upon themselves to rid their campus of garbage and other things that may collect rain water that can later become breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Dr. Jem Langas, DOH’s deputy program manager for dengue underscored the importance of having students participate in efforts that promote the health and safety of communities.

(Even schools are places where water can collect and become stagnant. If you drink from a plastic bottle and careless toss its cap, it can collect rainwater. This then becomes a breeding site for mosquitoes.)

The Department of Education said it has integrated anti-dengue measures in its curriculum particularly in the subjects of science and even values education.
