Image captured at the NIAID Integrated Research Facility in Fort Detrick, Maryland. <em>Credit: NIAID </em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — The Department of Health on Saturday assured the public that safeguards are in place against the Nipah virus and that no cases of it have been detected in the Philippines yet.</p><p>The agency clarified that border surveillance and screening protocols are always in place in airports and ports, regardless of whether a threat of a virus is present or not. </p><p>According to the DOH’s Bureau of Quarantine, all airports and ports are equipped with infrared thermal scanners at arrival concourses. </p><p>Two BOQ nurses are assigned to the thermal scanners monitoring the temperature of all passengers entering the country.</p><p>The scanners sound an alarm if the temperature exceeds 37.5 degrees Celsius. </p><p>Spotters also manually observe passengers for wounds or rashes. </p><p>After primary screening, passengers who exhibit symptoms undergo an interview and physical check, in accordance with the health and safety protocols.</p><p>Should be needed to be referred to a hospital for further observation, the passenger will be brought to a DOH-designated hospital, including the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).</p><p>DOH said the eTravel app also has a health declaration checklist that passengers are mandated to accomplish before entering the country. </p><p>Individuals coming from flagged countries will undergo additional examination, it added. </p><p>Two Nipah virus cases have been confirmed in India.</p><p>Nipah is a rare viral infection that spreads largely from infected animals, mainly fruit bats, to humans. </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/health-science/2026/1/30/explainer-what-to-know-about-nipah-virus-after-cases-emerge-in-india-0650">EXPLAINER - What to know about Nipah virus after cases emerge in India</a></div><p>It can be asymptomatic but it is often very dangerous, with a case fatality rate of 40% to 75%, depending on the local healthcare system&#x27;s capacity for detection and management, the World Health Organization said. </p><p>Its <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/health-science/2026/1/29/what-are-symptoms-of-nipah-virus-and-how-can-you-protect-yourself-from-it-1548">symptoms </a>include fever, headache, sore throat, cough and difficulty breathing. </p><div><strong>— With reports from Reuters and Raphael Bosano, ABS-CBN News</strong></div><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/health-science/2026/1/28/doh-why-nipah-virus-outbreak-is-unlikely-in-metro-manila-1335">DOH : Why Nipah virus outbreak is unlikely in Metro Manila</a></div><div><br/></div><div><strong>RELATED VIDEO:</strong></div><div style="text-align:center"><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MzbyRWbrgi8?si=Ud-csIb1oNSMUpAi" title="YouTube video player" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div>
