MANILA - The country’s ageing population steadily grew in the previous years, based on the statistics gathered by the 2024 Census of Population (POPCEN).The 2024 census showed that the household population of the Philippines reached 112.33 million persons.One in every ten persons was a senior citizen, comprising 10.2 percent of the household population. The census said this represents an increase from 9.22 million, or 8.5 percent of the household population, recorded in 2020. “The rising proportion of senior citizens indicates a continuing growth of the country&#x27;s older population,” POPCEN said in its findings.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/07/10/21/population-growth-in-manila-declined-in-2020-census-reveals">Population growth in Manila declined in 2020, census reveals</a></div> The median age increased to 27.7 years in 2024 from 24.3 years in 2015 to 25.3 years in 2020.  The growing median age, which represents the midpoint of the population&#x27;s age distribution reflect a shift toward an older population structure. Meanwhile, two in every five persons in the household population were of school age. The school age  (persons aged 5 to 24 years) population comprised 37.5 percent of the household population, or approximately 42.10 million persons. This was lower than the 39.4 percent, or 42.78 million school-age population, recorded in 2020.<div>MORE MALES THAN FEMALES</div>Of the total household population in 2024, 56.68 million (50.5%) were males and 55.65 million (49.5%) were females, as indicated by POPCEN.By age group, 29.98 million (26.7%) were under 15 years of age (young dependents). Meanwhile, the working age population (15 to 64 years) summed up to 74.95 million (66.7%), while those aged 65 years and over (old dependents) comprised the remaining 7.40 million (6.6%). In 2020, persons aged 0 to 14 years, 15 to 64 years, and 65 years and over accounted for 30.7 percent, 63.9 percent, and 5.4 percent, respectively, of the household population.  <div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/1/16/ph-s-rising-population-growth-not-a-cause-for-concern-commission-1600">PH’s rising population growth not a cause for concern—Commission </a> </div>In 2024, males outnumbered females in all age groups 0 to 54 years. Males in these age groups comprised 51.2 percent of 0 to 54 years while females accounted for the remaining 48.8 percent. In the older age groups 55 years and over, the females outnumbered males. Among those aged 55 years and over, 54.3 percent were females while 45.7 percent were males.
