Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/File</div>MANILA — Eight out of the 17 cities in Metro Manila, as well as one municipality, have reached the coverage target of 95% immunization against measles-rubella, the Department of Health said on Tuesday. These include Parañaque, Makati, Manila, Pasay, Navotas, Mandaluyong, Pasig, and Quezon City. The achievement, the agency says, helps in increasing much needed protection against potential outbreaks of the disease. As a region, however, the NCR fell short of the 95 percent target at just 87 percent by the end of the measles-rubella supplemental immunization activity (MR-SIA) in June.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/health-science/2026/1/6/doh-aims-to-immunize-over-10-million-filipino-children-from-measles-rubella-1416">READ: DOH aims to immunize over 10 million Filipino children vs measles-rubella</a></div>Data from the DOH Metro Manila Center for Health Development show that of the over 1.2 million children aged six to 59 months, over one million have been inoculated against the virus. Six out of every 10 barangays in Metro Manila have also achieved the target. &quot;While these results are encouraging, the DOH reminds parents that vaccination should not stop with special campaigns,&quot; it said in a statement. The measles-rubella vaccine is a two-dose regimen. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes the first dose is given at 12 through 15 months while the second is between age four to six years, just before entering school.As of May 2026, the NCR has recorded 32 percent coverage for both the first and second dose or routine immunization.&quot;Makati, Quezon City, and Pasig each achieved at least 40 percent coverage, the highest in the country. However, these accomplishments are still below the regional target of 54 percent for May, meaning many children have yet to receive their scheduled vaccinations.&quot;<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/health-science/2026/1/12/experts-closely-monitoring-infectious-diseases-parents-urged-to-have-their-children-vaccinated-1821">READ: Experts closely monitoring infectious diseases; parents urged to have their children vaccinated</a></div>In 2019, the country saw an outbreak of the highly contagious virus with pockets of outbreaks also recorded in other provinces in the years that followed. The DOH emphasized that vaccines against measles-rubella have been used for decades and are highly effective in protecting vulnerable children. &quot;Every child who gets vaccinated is one more child protected from serious illness. We thank all parents, local government units, healthcare workers, and community volunteers who helped make this campaign a success. At the same time, we encourage families whose children have not yet completed their routine vaccinations to visit their health centers so we can continue building stronger protection for every community,&quot; the DOH said.
