Job Manahan, ABS-CBN News"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">A Bonifacio Day protest in Mendiola, November 30, 2024. <em>Job Manahan, ABS-CBN News</em></span></span></span>MANILA -- The Manila Police District (MPD) arrested an individual during a Bonifacio Day protest in Mendiola on Saturday, with at least 40 reportedly injured during a confrontation between the protesters and police. </div><p>Protesters from Kilusang Mayo Uno, Piston, Gabriela, and other labor groups started their rally past 8 a.m. at Liwasang Bonifacio, calling for higher wages and equal opportunities for education and work this Bonifacio Day. </p><p>Some of them also urged the Marcos administration to address alleged corruption issues in the government. </p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2024/11/30/workers-protest-high-prices-dominance-of-political-dynasties-on-bonifacio-day-1025">READ: Workers protest high prices, dominance of political dynasties on Bonifacio Day</a></div><p>But things turned sour past 10 a.m. when militant groups breached the barrier created by the police along Loyola Street. This was when chaos ensued. </p><p>The MPD said 7 police personnel were injured, while KMU said around 40 protesters were hurt from the incident.</p><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/f8wNGUcXk7U?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span>The ABS-CBN News team also captured the moment one police personnel had to step back from his post and requested immediate treatment for injuries on his face.</div><p>Police were able to arrest a male protester for allegedly causing disturbance. </p><p>&quot;Mayroon tayong mga nasaktan na pulis diyan,&quot; said PMaj. Philipp Ines, MPD spokesperson. </p><p>&quot;Patuloy natin nirerespeto ang kanilang karapatan ngunit ang karapatan at kalayaan nila ay may kaakibat na responsibilidad. Mayroon tayong mga freedom parks sa Maynila kung saan pwede sila pumunta doon kaya lang itong lugar kung saan sila pupunta ay hindi ito kasama sa freedom park,&quot; PMaj. Ines added. </p><p>Gabriela Partylist Rep. Arlene Brosas, for her part, criticized the police for allegedly barring her group from checking the arrested person&#x27;s condition. </p><p>The lawmaker said they would raise the issue to the Commission on Human Rights. </p><p>&quot;Nagkaroon ng gitgitan dito para makapunta kami. Hinuli siya so hindi namin alam kung ano ang kalagayan niya ngayon, stroke survivor siya tapos senior citizen. Kanina pa siya hinuli. Ayaw nila tayo papasukin, hindi nila tayo pinapapasok. Ako lang naman ang papasok,&quot; Rep. Brosas said. </p><p>KMU Secretary General Jerome Adonis said the police were barring them from reaching nearby the Mendiola Peace Arch. </p><p>&quot;Ang gusto namin makadating dito sa paa ng Mendiola dala-dala ang aming panawagan. Of course, kung nangharang sila, nag-assert kami ng aming karapatan para makadiretso dito. Magkakaroon talaga ng tulakan,&quot; said Adonis. </p><p>&quot;Ang sabi nila, may nasaktan sa hanay nila. May nasaktan din sa amin. Mayroon pang tinamaanng kanilang pamalo,&quot; he added. </p><p>Their program finished around 12 noon, which the Philippine National Police (PNP) condemned for being supposedly &quot;violent.&quot; </p><p>The PNP called on groups to engage in peaceful and meaningful dialogues and prevent similar incidents from happening again.</p><p>&quot;Today&#x27;s events underscore the delicate balance the PNP strives to uphold between protecting the rights to free speech and peaceful assembly and ensuring the safety and security of our communities,&quot; said the PNP in a statement. </p><p>It emphasized that those who caused violence and disturbance would be held accountable. </p><p>&quot;We reaffirm our commitment to upholding every Filipino&#x27;s constitutional right to peaceful assembly. However, we cannot and will not tolerate any form of violence that endangers the public or undermines the rule of law. Those responsible for instigating chaos and harming others will be held accountable in accordance with the law,&quot; it said. </p><div></div>
