MANILA — A total of 162 barangays across 12 municipalities in Negros Occidental are at risk of lahar flows from Kanlaon Volcano due to heavy rainfall that may affect the Visayas region, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said on Tuesday.

In a media release, the OCD said around 644,487 residents in the affected areas should remain alert and be prepared for the impending weather conditions.

"We 644pxmust stay vigilant and prepared as we face the challenges posed by these weather conditions," said Raul Fernandez, director of the OCD Western Visayas and head of the Regional Task Force Kanlaon.

State weather bureau PAGASA earlier in the day said a low pressure area (LPA) was spotted some 155 kilometers east-southeast of Tagum City, Davao del Norte. The LPA has a high chance of developing into tropical depression Querubin, the first storm of December.

It is expected to bring significant rainfall and thunderstorms, further increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides, especially in areas surrounding Kanlaon Volcano.

Negros Occidental includes several cities and municipalities that are particularly vulnerable to volcanic hazards, such as Bago City, La Carlota City, Pontevedra, Pulupandan, San Enrique, Valladolid, Binalbagan, Himamaylan City, Hinigaran, Isabela, La Castellana, and Moises Padilla (Magallon).

Residents have been advised to closely monitor weather updates from PAGASA and alerts from local government units, familiarize themselves with the nearest evacuation centers, be prepared to relocate if necessary, and avoid river channels, streams, and areas identified as lahar-prone.
