MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday maintained his stance against the impeachment bids versus Vice President Sara Duterte.

He made the remark when he was asked about his thoughts on Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile’s comment that the country could suffer a “very detrimental precedent” if it follows the logic inferred by religious group Iglesia Ni Cristo during its National Rally for Peace.

The group earlier explained that the rally was a call for peace and unity, noting that they support Marcos Jr.’s opposition against the impeachment raps against the vice president.

“JPE is one of our best legal thinkers in the country. And he is right, there is a consequence to – there will be a precedent, and it will be very problematic,” Marcos said in a chance interview with the media on Burauen, Leyte following the ceremonial turnover of eight Yolanda Permanent Housing Projects.

While the president noted Congress’ mandate to process impeachment complaints once they are filed, he said the “timing is very poor” with the upcoming elections in May.

“I don't think that now is the time to go through that. So, ipaubaya na muna natin sa ating… tutal as a practical matter, papasok na tayo sa campaign period. Wala nang congressman, wala nang senador dahil nangangampanya na sila. Hindi tayo makakapagbuo ng quorum,” Marcos said.

“And so, as a practical matter, the timing is very poor,” he said.

Three impeachment complaints have so far been filed and “verified” in the House of Representatives against Duterte.

House Secretary General Reginald Velasco said the complaints were ready to be transmitted to House Speaker Martin Romualdez’s office “at any time”.
