<p>MANILA — The Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 223 on Friday convicted three men for the abduction in 2013 of businesswoman Sally Chua, whom they kidnapped for ransom.</p><p>Ramil Macamay, Riccente Padillo, and Rodante Cabaylo of the &quot;Bye Bye Kidnap for Ransom Group&quot; were found guilty beyond reasonable doubt of having conspired to kidnap Chua and demand ransom for her release.</p><p>Presiding Judge Caridad Walse-Lutero sentenced the three to reclusion perpetua, or up to 40 years imprisonment, without eligibility of parole.</p><p>They were also ordered to pay, jointly and severally P100,000 as civil indemnity, P100,000 as moral damages and P100,000 exemplary damages.</p><p>“[Chua] was present during the promulgation — and then, of course, masayang masaya ang Movement for Restoration of Peace and Order...kasi finally justice is served,” lawyer Olivia Laroza Torevillas said.</p><p>(Chua was present during the promulgation and, of course, the Movement for Restoration of Peace and Order is very happy because finally, justice is served)</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/1/11/kidnapping-of-chinese-businessmen-might-be-pogo-related-pnp-says-2324">Kidnapping of Chinese, businessmen might be POGO-related, PNP says<br/></a></div><p>“The Movement for Restoration of Peace and Order applauds the triumph of justice in the court’s decision to convict the kidnappers of Ms. Sally Chua,” its chairman Melvin Dy said.</p><p>&quot;Indeed, the certainty of accountability, by way of the lawful punishment for crimes, convey the powerful message that crime does not pay,” he added.</p><p>Chua was abducted in Quezon City in July 2013 and her kidnappers took her through Albay and Leyte provinces and on to Butuan City and Davao City, where she was rescued.</p><p>The ransom her release was initially set at P100 million but Chua said she negotiated until they agreed to lower it to P15 million.</p><p>She said she withdrew part of the ransom at a bank in Butuan, but also told her captors to let her withdraw the balance in Davao City because the bank did not have enough funds.</p><p>Davao authorities killed three of her kidnappers in a shootout outside a bank where Chua was withdrawing the rest of the ransom money.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2024/12/5/abducted-american-vlogger-believed-dead-police-1510">Abducted American vlogger believed dead — police<br/></a></div><p>Two other gang members escaped while Macamay, the group&#x27;s alleged leader, was arrested in a joint operation by the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group and the Davao police later on.</p><p>Of the 14 kidnappers, three were killed, three were arrested and convicted while eight are still at large.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>FROM THE ARCHIVES:</strong></div><div><strong><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uQU5Ve1PI9I?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span></strong><br/></div>
