2 OFWs reported missing in Hong Kong

<div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/17604392997741760439294091.jpeg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left"><em>Photo courtesy of the Hong Kong Police Force </em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Hong Kong has confirmed that  two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have gone missing.</p><p>Imee Pabuaya, 24, last communicated with her family Saturday, Oct. 4, saying she sent money to her mother. On the same day, her sister, Irene Pabuaya, received a message from Imee’s employer that the OFW has gone missing.</p><p>According to her sister, Imee, who has only been in Hong Kong for nine months, is in a relationship with her fellow domestic helper Aleli Tibay, 33, who has been working in the country for eight years.</p><p>“Kinontak ko yung agency niya saka yung OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration) at DMW (Department of Migrant Workers). Pinuntahan ko na pero wala pa ring update sa consulate if nakalabas na ba sila sa Hong Kong,” Irene said.</p><p>“Patuloy na nagme-message sa akin ang Hong Kong police na nagse-send ng message sa akin, nagu-update kung paano ang ginagawa nilang search operations,” she added.</p><p>The PCG received Irene’s report on Oct. 8 and attempted to contact the two and their employers, but to no response, said Consul General Romulo Victor Israel Jr.</p><p>He said the Hong Kong immigration has not yet confirmed the report that Pabuaya and Tibay crossed the Hong Kong border.</p><p>“As of now, nakakalungkot lang na maraming lumutang na balita na sila daw po ay nakalabas na raw ng Hong Kong pero sa ngayon hindi natin ito masabi na definitively kung ano yung whereabouts nila.”</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/8/20/hong-kong-detains-6-filipino-workers-for-alleged-visa-breaches-dfa-1951">Hong Kong detains 6 Filipino workers for alleged visa breaches — DFA</a></div><p>The consulate is communicating with Hong Kong police to track the two Filipinos, Israel said.</p><p>There were also reports that they went hiking during allegedly bad weather on the day they went missing.</p><p>Israel confirmed there was a weather disturbance on Oct. 5 but it was a relatively weak typhoon. “Kung Oct. 4 sila namasyal, wala pa ho siyang bad weather.”</p><p>The consul general reminded Filipinos in Hong Kong and in the Philippines to be vigilant in consuming unverified information from social media.</p><p>Pabuaya and Tibay were last spotted on Oct. 4 at Yeung Uk Road, a popular hiking spot, Tsuen Wan District.  </p><p>OWWA has reached out and will be visiting Tibay’s family in General Santos City, said Israel.</p><div> </div><div><strong>DMW CALLS FOR LEAD</strong></div><p>The DMW, in a statement, urged individuals with information on the whereabouts of Pabuaya and Tibay to immediately reach out to PCG and the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) – Hong Kong.</p><p>“Ang bawat tip, larawan, o detalye ay maaaring maging mahalagang susi sa mas mabilis na pagkakatagpo sa kanila,” it said.</p><p>Persons with information may reach out DMW through the following:</p><p>Telephone:+852 2866 0640 DMW - 1348 </p><p>Email: mwo_hongkong@dmw.gov.ph</p><p>The DMW said it is working with the PCG, Hong Kong Police Force, and Hong Kong Immigration Department to find the two Filipinos.</p><p>It said it will also provide necessary assistance to the families, including legal, medical, emergency and even emotional.</p><div> </div><div><strong>LAST CONVERSATION</strong></div><p>In an interview over DZMM Teleradyo, Irene recounted their last conversation about money she sent to their mother in the Philippines. Irene also mentioned that at around 7 PM, Imee’s employer was trying to contact her. </p><p>Despite attempts to reach Imee through social media and official channels, including the Philippine Consulate in Hong Kong, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) — no contact has been made. Irene also noted that Imee and Alelie Tibay are partners.</p><p>Meanwhile, Israel Jr.stated that government agencies are collaborating closely with the Hong Kong Police to aid in the search and are coordinating with the families of Imee and Alelie.</p><p>Alelie&#x27;s employer remains uncontactable at this time. </p><p>The Consul General also cautioned the public against believing unverified information circulating on social media, as many speculations are being spread.</p><p>Alelie has been working as a domestic helper in Hong Kong since 2017 and is originally from General Santos City, while Imee arrived in Hong Kong last November 2024.</p><p>Police reviewed CCTV footage and confirmed that the two were last seen entering the hiking trail.</p><p>Lung Mun Country Trail is a 7.6-kilometer point-to-point trail near Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong. It is moderately challenging and typically takes about 2 hours and 22 minutes to complete. During unfavorable weather, mountain streams can swell and sometimes overflow, increasing the risk of landslides. The trail is narrow, exposed, and becomes dangerously slippery when wet, making it unsafe to hike during rain or typhoon conditions.</p><p>The Hong Kong Police are conducting search and rescue operations around the country park and nearby hiking paths.
