The building was razed in a fire last May 21, 2023. <em>Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News</em></span></span></span></div><p>Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon on Wednesday vowed to fast track the rehabilitation of the Manila Post Office, which was destroyed by a fire in May 2023.</p><p>During the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost), Dizon said the project will be implemented in phases - the goal is to finish the first phase by  middle of 2026.</p><p>“Kailangan talaga ma-restore natin nang tama at mabilis itong napakaimportante at iconic na landmark natin dito sa Metro Manila… Uunahin po natin ‘yung Phase 1 which will mostly likely be the facade, ‘yung harap, at ‘yung lobby,” said Dizon.</p><p>But he also stressed the importance of doing it right, in coordination with PHLPost and the National Historical Institute.</p><p>“Very, very meticulous tayo dito. Dapat ang contractor nito magaling. Hindi pupwedeng St Timothy dito, tsaka St Gerrard. Maria said a Conservation Management Plan will also be followed.</p><p>“After restoring it, we will still use it as a post office… This will be a highlight of how good processes, integrity, and trustworthiness can rebuild a historical structure here in the Philippines,” he said.</p><p>The initial budget for the restoration is P300 million.</p><p>“We will utilize the insurance we received. Of course, since this will be in phases, so it will entail additional budget pa,” added Sta.
