(Photo by Alan Tangcawan / AFP)</span></span></span></div><p style="text-align: left;">MANILA &mdash; The Philippine Air Force (PAF) and the Philippine Coast Guard have deployed personnel and assets to aid the affected communities in Cebu following the destructive 6.9-magnitude earthquake, helping in search, rescue, and retrieval operations and transporting relief goods from Manila.&nbsp;</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/10/2/death-toll-from-cebu-quake-climbs-to-72-0832">Death toll from Cebu quake climbs to 72 as aftershocks near 2,800</a></div><p>At least 72 people were reported dead as hundreds of houses and other infrastructure were destroyed across the province following the earthquake on Tuesday night, while aftershocks continue to rattle the Central Visayas region.</p><p>At least 294 others were injured.</p><p>A C-130 aircraft transported critical relief supplies from Villamor Air Base in Pasay City to Mactan-Benito Ebuen Air Base in Lapu-Lapu City, according to the PAF.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/10/2/marcos-visits-town-hardest-hit-by-cebu-quake-1151">Marcos visits Cebu quake epicenter</a></div><p>The cargo included 812 evacuation kits from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, assorted CSSR equipment from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, and 170 boxes of medical supplies from the Department of Health.</p><p>&ldquo;These missions were executed through the combined efforts of the 220th Airlift Wing, Tactical Operations Wing Central, Air Mobility Command, and the Air Defense Command, ensuring both the swift deployment of rescue personnel and the timely delivery of critical supplies,&rdquo; the PAF said.</p><p>The NDRRMC said a total of 47,221 families, or 170,959 individuals, were affected by the quake.</p><div><br></div><div><strong>ANOTHER SHIP TO CEBU</strong></div><div><br></div><p>Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard said it will deploy BRP Gabriela Silang (OPV-8301) to Cebu City on Friday to bring food packs and evacuation supplies to victims of the powerful quake.</p><p>&quot;Ang barkong ito ay maglalayag mamaya. Dala nito ang 5,000 food packs and evacuation kits galing sa Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office sa utos po ng ating Presidente. Meron din itong dalang water filtration machines galing sa OCD,&quot; PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan told reporters on Thursday.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/10/1/cebu-quake-likely-triggered-by-fault-that-had-not-produced-powerful-tremor-in-past-400-years-1012">Cebu quake likely triggered by fault that had not produced powerful tremor in past 400 years</a></div><p>PCG will begin loading the ship with 3,000 family food packs and 2,000 evacuation supply kits at 11 pm.</p><p>As the death toll of the powerful quake continues to rise, hospitals in the affected areas are getting overwhelmed with the number of injured patients.</p><p>Gavan said their ships have a limited capability to give basic medical interventions, especially with doctors and nurses on board.</p><p>&quot;Lahat ng barko natin may sick bay. Kung hindi naman mga komplikado, pwede rin siya. Parang clinic rin siya, but it&#39;s not really a hospital. But Gavan was quick to clarify that their ships are &quot;by design not really a hospital ship.&quot;</p><p>Gavan admitted the PCG encountered challenges during search and rescue operations in quake-hit areas due to the road networks being cut off.</p><p>&quot;So yung pag-augment namin ng units in Bogo, Medellin, and other surrounding areas, medyo mahirap kaya by sea natin idadaaan. Sira din yung port doon sa Bogo, that was the initial challenge, pero nakapag-adjust naman tayo,&quot; he said.</p><div><br></div><div><strong>TROPICAL STORM PAOLO <br></strong></div><div><br></div><p>With tropical storm Paolo threatening the country, Gavan said the PCG is ready with contingency measures.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/weather-traffic/2025/10/2/paolo-slightly-intensifies-signal-no-2-now-up-1205">Paolo slightly intensifies, Signal No. 2 now up</a></div><p>&quot;Lagi naman tayong humaharap sa krisis sa panahon. Nakahanda naman kami, may mga kagamitan kaming ma-procure para matugunan, ma-alleviate kahit papaano yung inconvenience dala ng masamang panahon,&quot; he said.</p><p>Gavan said the journey of the ship, which will take about 23 hours, will not be affected by tropical storm Paolo. In case the storm hits, the PCG will steer clear from its path.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/10/1/cebu-needs-help-province-calls-for-donations-after-powerful-quake-1352">Cebu needs help: Province calls for donations after powerful quake</a></div><p>The PCG said two portable water desalinator machines have arrived in Bogo City, Cebu on Thursday, which can help supply 20,000 liters of clean water for quake victims.</p><p>The six K9 units of PCG sent from Manila earlier reached Bogo City to help in search and rescue/retrieval operations.</p><div><br></div><div><strong>FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO FALLEN PCG PERSONNEL</strong></div><div><br></div><p>The PCG Commandant also paid tribute to their fallen personnel, who died following the collapse of the San Remigio Sports Complex in San Remigio, Cebu during Tuesday&#39;s quake.</p><p>Gavan asked for a moment of silence for Seaman Second Class Lawrence Palomo, Apprentice Seaman Jujay Mahusay, and Apprentice Seaman Ert Cart Dacunes.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/10/1/in-photos-cebu-appeals-for-help-after-powerful-quake-1753">IN PHOTOS: Cebu appeals for help after powerful quake</a></div><p>He said families of the three PCG personnel were given financial assistance.</p><p>&quot;Yes meron tayong mga financial benefits. Hindi pa lahat nabigay, pero nakabigay na rin po tayo,&quot; he said.</p><p>The three PCG personnel rushed to the Bogo General Hospital, but were later pronounced dead.</p><p>&quot;We extend our sincere condolences to the families of our fallen personnel. Their dedication to the service and camaraderie with our fellow uniformed men and women will always be remembered.
