Joel Nito, AFP/File</span></span></span></div><p>MANILA – Proposals for the imposition of the death penalty for corrupt public officials should be studied thoroughly, Malacañang said Wednesday. </p><p>The death penalty was formally abolished in the Philippines in 2006, but alleged corruption in flood control projects prompted calls for its revival. </p><p>“Inaaral nang mabuti dahil po dapat malinis, mabuti, maging maayos itong tinatawag nating… five pillars of justice system,” Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said of the proposal. </p><p>“Hindi po tayo puwede na umasa at maimpluwensiyahan, dapat mawala sa impluwensiya ng mga Pilipino iyong mga nakaraang pangyayari kung saan may nag-admit na sila ay sanay gumawa ng intriga at magplanta ng ebidensiya,” she told reporters. </p><p>The Palace official also raised the possibility that some innocent individuals could be sentenced wrongly. </p><div><br/></div><p>“Paano kung ang inosente ay nagawan ng intriga at naplantahan ng ebidensiya, death penalty ang maaaring ipataw. Kawawa naman po iyong masasabi nating inosente. So, ang muling pagpapataw ng death penalty ay dapat inaaral nang malaliman,” she said. </p><p>Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David recently reiterated his opposition to the revival of the death penalty, arguing that the wealthy could get the best legal team and even <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/9/22/cardinal-david-says-death-penalty-biased-against-the-poor-1155">manipulate the system.</a></p><p>Earlier this year, a proposed law seeking<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/1/22/house-bill-seeks-death-by-firing-squad-for-corrupt-public-officials-1328"> death by firing squad</a> for corrupt public officials was filed at the House of Representatives.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/showbiz/celebrities/2025/9/21/vice-ganda-calls-for-death-penalty-for-corrupt-officials-1723">Vice Ganda calls for death penalty for corrupt officials</a></div>
