Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News/File</div>MANILA -- The education, and public works and highways departments, with local government units will join forces in building more than 2,000 classrooms until 2026, according to Malacañang.Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said there would be 2,370 classrooms to be built between the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) through an agreement.As of September 30, around 200 classrooms could be finished by the end of the year, she added, while the government targets to complete the building of around 2,000 classrooms by the 3rd quarter next year.  <div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/10/21/-nawili-sa-flood-control-deped-laments-only-22-classrooms-built-in-2025-1655">READ: DepEd laments only 22 classrooms built so far in 2025</a></div>“Ang nais ng Pangulo, ang kakulangan sa classrooms ay dapat na mapunan sa lalong madaling panahon para sa kabutihan ng mga mag-aaral. Hindi puwede ang mabagal kumilos,” she said.The education department on Tuesday lamented that only 22 classrooms out of the 1,700 target for 2025, saying the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) might have been engrossed with the construction of flood control projects.Education Secretary Sonny Angara earlier said he wants local government units, first-, and even second-class municipalities power to build classrooms.He is also pushing for public-private partnerships, saying this could fast-track the construction for the country’s classroom backlogs.The current administration seeks to build 40,000 by the end of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr’s term in 2028, he said, and DepEd plans to meet the goal.
