Bianca Dava, ABS-CBN News</span></span></span></div><p>BOGO CITY, Cebu — At least 14 people have been confirmed dead in San Remigio, Cebu after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the province and nearby areas on Tuesday night, toppling buildings, crushing vehicles, and leaving entire communities without power.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/10/1/cebu-quake-likely-triggered-by-fault-that-had-not-produced-powerful-tremor-in-past-400-years-1012">Cebu quake likely triggered by fault that had not produced powerful tremor in past 400 years</a></div><p>Among the casualties was 24-year-old Jude Destura, who had been serving as a referee during the Mayor’s Cup basketball games at the San Remigio Sports Complex just hours before the quake.</p><p>He was trapped beneath the rubble when the tremor hit around 10 p.m.</p><p>His sister, Jessa, recalled the anguish of her family. Their father had gone to the sports complex the next morning after Jude failed to return home.</p><p>“Umaga na, hindi pa [siya nakauwi]. Kaya pumunta ang papa ko sa gym kasi hindi kami mapakali ba. Yung motor niya nasa labas. Na-trap talaga siya. Bunso kasi siya namin. Mahilig siya sa sports kahit anong advice na tapusin ang pag-aaral. Mabait. Mabait na kapatid,” Jessa told ABS-CBN News.</p><p>Rescuers only managed to retrieve Jude’s remains on Wednesday morning.</p><p>Also killed were three members of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and one firefighter from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), who had been serving as basketball players. They were rushed to a hospital but did not survive.</p><p>Both the PCG and the BFP issued statements expressing condolences to the victims’ families.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>ELDERLY WOMAN CRUSHED AT HOME</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>Another victim was 86-year-old Anisha Dignos, who was crushed by a wall while asleep in her home.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/10/2/death-toll-from-cebu-quake-climbs-to-72-0832">Death toll from Cebu quake climbs to 72 as aftershocks top 3,000</a></div><p>Her daughter Brenda recalled the painful scene: “Akong mama hindi na makuan. Nakuha sa mga tanod [patay na]. Hindi man siya kadaog sa hollow block.”</p><p>Brenda’s own child was also badly injured and had to undergo surgery in Cebu City.</p><p>The local government of San Remigio is appealing for help as many roads remain impassable, hampering rescue and relief efforts.</p><p>“The impact was so severe. The aftershocks were not small in intensity. It was really like an earthquake pa talaga. May ilang roads na hindi passable. Yung bridges connecting to other barangays,” Vice Mayor Alfie Reynes Corominas-Gonzales said in an interview on DZMM TeleRadyo.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>BUSINESSES, LIVELIHOODS DESTROYED</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>In the nearby town of Sogod, massive rocks rolled down and crushed the vehicles, farm animals, and the billiards business of Mary Rose Lauron.</p><p>“Damage po namin ay van, pedicab, 8 motorcycles, billiards [business], mga kambing, mga manok atyung mga gamit namin sa pangtrabaho, mga rattan. Bahala na ang mga gamit, at least walang taong nasaktan. Masakit po kasi… Pinaghirapan po kasi namin, biglang nawala,” Lauron said.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/lifestyle/food-travel/2025/10/2/tourist-rest-area-in-medellin-turned-into-drop-off-point-for-quake-donations-1917">Tourist rest area in Medellin turned into drop-off point for quake donations</a></div><p>Clearing operations were immediately conducted to reopen the affected road.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>CHURCH BUILDING IN EPICENTER COLLAPSE</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>In Bogo City, the quake’s epicenter, a dormitory and function hall inside the Archdiocesan Shrine of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish collapsed.</p><p>Inside the church, statues of saints fell and broke—except for one of St. Vincent, which remained standing.</p><p>“Kung pwede may makatabang na. Paniniwala namin kay San Vicente, siya lang talaga ang nakatayo. Walang nangyari sa kanya. Hindi nabiyak ang kanyang glass,” Father Ramon Obredo emphasized.</p><p>Across northern Cebu, homes and commercial establishments were heavily damaged.
