Alvin Curada, director of the Department of Labor and Employment - Bureau of Working Conditions, talks about how to compute the government mandated 13th-month pay for workers.Speaking to DZMM, the labor official said the 13th-month pay is computed by adding the total basic salary earned for the entire year divided by 12. “This should approximate your entire one-month pay,” he said.Curada said some employers sometimes give half of the 13th month pay in June and the other half in December while other employers divide the 13th month pay into 4 tranches or even monthly payouts.Under Presidential Decree 851, the deadline for payment of the 13th month pay is December 24 but employers are encouraged to give the mandated bonus much earlier “so that employees can buy what they need before prices go up.”Employees who did not work for the entire year will have a prorated 13th-month pay. “If they work for only 4 months, it will be 4 months pay divided by 12,” Curada said, adding that employees should have worked for at least 1 month for their employer to be eligible for 13th-month.
