<p>MANILA -- At least two lawmakers believe Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment will be an election issue, as the country kicked off the campaign period for the May midterm polls on Tuesday. </p><p>They issued the statement after Senate President Francis Escudero said the impeachment trial will possibly begin after the President’s State of the Nation Address in July. </p><p>“Dapat natin tanungin ang ating mga hinahalal… kung dapat bang panagutin ang mga tao patungkol sa pagwawaldas ng pera ng bayan… patungkol sa hindi pagsunod sa Saligang batas. So isang malaking test ‘yan sa lahat ng kandidato sa aming paninindigan para sa bayan,” House Assistant Majority Leader and Taguig City 2nd District Representative Amparo Maria Zamora said. </p><p>“I think definitely magiging election issue po ito and it should be welcomed,” 1-RIDER Party List Representative Rodge Gutierrez, who is among the impeachment prosecutors, added.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/2/10/vp-sara-duterte-s-impeachment-trial-may-start-after-marcos-sona-escudero-1647">VP Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial may start after Marcos Jr.&#x27;s SONA: Escudero</a></div><p> Zamora, meanwhile, pointed out that the legislative calendar for the 3rd regular session of Congress provides that its break begins on February 8th, which means the Senate could “technically” have had the time to address the articles of impeachment filed by the lower chamber on February 5th, if it did not adjourn that day.</p><p> “Natapos ang plenary session nila noong [February] 5 pero technically may panahon pa, may dalawang araw pa po. Pero having said that, again iginagalang natin kung ano man ang gagawin ng ating Senado,” she said. </p><p>Despite this, House prosecution panel will not call on the Senate to hold a special session or schedule the impeachment trial, according to Gutierrez.</p><p> “Ayaw po naming mamis-interpret as trying to unduly interfere, or influence ‘yung yet-to-be-convened impeachment court. Kailangan pong maintindihan we will be advocates po in that court and of course anything that we might say or do might be tainted with bias so we&#x27;d rather it not come from us,” he said.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/2/10/house-prosecutors-prep-for-sara-duterte-s-impeachment-trial-2230">House prosecutors prep for Sara Duterte&#x27;s impeachment trial</a></div><p> The panel’s preparations will also continue.</p><p> Gutierrez believes the prosecution has “more than evidence” to convince the Senate impeachment court to convict Vice President Duterte and remove her from office.
