Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News </span></span></span></div><div><br/></div><p>MANILA — The Supreme Court said it could tackle during its regular en banc session on Tuesday the petition to compel the Senate to immediately start the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.</p><p>“The case was raffled today and will possibly be included in tomorrow’s agenda, along with other petitions, SC Spokesperson Atty. Camille Ting said in a statement.</p><p>The petition for mandamus was filed by lawyer Catalino Generillo, Jr. last Friday, arguing that the Constitution mandates that the Senate conduct the trial “forthwith” or immediately.</p><p>Generillo said in the petition that senators “are not suffering from any kind of disability, physical or mental&quot; that would keep them from convening an impeachment court and &quot;forthwith conduct public trial to determine whether the Vice President is guilty or not.”</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/2/15/lawyer-asks-sc-to-direct-senate-to-proceed-with-impeachment-trial-1429">Lawyer asks SC to direct Senate to proceed with Sara Duterte impeachment trial</a></div><p>Earlier this month, Vice President Sara Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives in relation to her alleged misuse of public funds and her statements supposedly threatening the lives of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., First Lady Liza Marcos and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/2/7/sara-duterte-says-she-s-okay-after-impeachment-we-leave-it-to-the-lawyers-1127">Sara Duterte says she’s ‘okay’ after impeachment: ‘We leave it to the lawyers’</a></div><p>The articles of impeachment however were filed at the Senate just hours before it adjourned its plenary session until June 2, 2025.</p><p>Senate President Francis Escudero has said Duterte&#x27;s trial will probably not begin until after May&#x27;s midterm elections -- or finish before the next congress takes over in July.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/2/17/-marami-pwedeng-mangyari-senate-on-the-hot-seat-in-vp-duterte-impeach-trial-1204">&#x27;Marami pwedeng mangyari&#x27;: Senate on the hot seat in VP Duterte impeach trial</a></div><p>If convicted in the Senate trial, she would be barred from running for future public office.  </p>
