Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News</div>MANILA -- President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed into law a measure granting a 3-year term for the commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).Under Republic Act No. 12122, the PCG&#x27;s top official &quot;shall have a maximum term of three years, which shall commence on the date of appointment… unless otherwise terminated by the President.&quot;&quot;The PCG Commandant shall be compulsorily retired upon completion of the maximum term or upon relief of the President,&quot; according to the law, which Marcos Jr. signed on February 18.&quot;This Act shall take effect immediately after its complete publication in the Official Gazette or in at least one newspaper of general circulation,&quot; it read.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/1/20/senate-oks-fixed-term-for-coast-guard-chief-1817">READ: Senate OKs fixed term for Coast Guard chief</a></div>In 2023, Marcos Jr. — who has taken a strong stance against China in the West Philippine Sea — appointed Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan as the 30th commandant of the PCG, following the retirement of then-Commandant Admiral Artemio Abu, who headed the agency for over 3 decades.Gavan — a member of the Philippine Military Academy&#x27;s Maalab Class of 1993 — was set to retire this year, but the newly signed law may further extend his term at the PCG&#x27;s helm until October 2026.
