MANILA -- A lawmaker issued a reminder on Tuesday that unity should not get in the way of accountability, as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed openness to reconcile with the Duterte family.

House Deputy Majority Leader and Iloilo 1st District Representative Janette Garin said that while she is supportive of a united government, she believes that there are limits.

“Naniniwala akong unity within the country is actually one ingredient that most Filipinos like. However, that unity will have a delineation. Kaakibat kasi ng unity is also accountability. So I am not sure how the President will delineate that,” Garin said.

“Mas maganda talaga nagsasama-sama. Kaya lang mayroon kasi tayong obligasyon sa sambayanang Pilipino… Sa public service, there are guiding principles that we have to follow because ang boss talaga natin ay ang sambayanang Pilipino. So we will look forward for big political families to unite, but then babalik lang tayo doon na hindi naman mapabayaan ‘yung serbisyo, ‘yung expectations, at ‘yung nararapat na maging mga desisyon kaugnay doon sa serbisyo sa bawat pamilyang Pilipino,” she added.

Garin believes it could “take time” before the two families can reconcile.

Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte were runningmates under the UniTeam and won in the 2022 elections. But in 2024, former President Rodrigo Duterte and his son Sebastian Duterte accused the President of being a weak leader and allegedly using cocaine.

Early this year, the House of Representatives impeached Vice President Sara Duterte on allegations of confidential funds misuse.

The administration later allowed the arrest of her father on the basis of a warrant from the International Criminal Court over alleged crimes against humanity stemming from his bloody war on drugs.

“I really hope and I pray that these two big families will unite. Hindi ko lang alam, kasi nakikita mo ‘yung emosyon ng Duterte family. I'm not sure if that will be tenable at this point of time. ‘Yung mga ganon. Kasi syempre, hindi naging maliwanag na ito ay obligasyon ng bansa natin… Baka medyo malalim kasi yung ugat na nangyayari. So, it will take time most probably,” Garin said.

She believes the VP impeachment trial will be a good opportunity for Duterte to clear herself from allegations.

“It's actually the best opportunity for the Vice President to defend herself. Kasi sa totoo lang, doon sa impeachment trial, kapag naipakita niya sa taong bayan na wala naman talagang basihan ‘yung reklamo sa kanya, then it will be a very good vindication for all these allegations… It's now in the hands of Senate,” Garin said.
