MANILA — Rehabilitation of EDSA will start on the Pasay to Shaw Boulevard stretch and will require road rerouting, the Department of Public Works and Highways said.

Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan said DPWH hopes work on that segment will be completed "towards the end of the year", with rehabilitation of other parts of the 85-year-old highway to follow.

The Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have been tasked with developing rerouting plans to lessen the inconvenience to the public, Bonoan said.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon earlier said that he is talking to Metro Manila Skyway management for free access to the tollway until road repairs on EDSA are completed.

The road works are in preparation for the Philippines' hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 2026, with preliminary meetings to be held in Manila early next year.

EDSA — which has a carrying capacity of 250,000 vehicles — is the capital region’s busiest highway with over 464,000 motorists plying the thoroughfare daily, according to 2024 data from the MMDA. — Katrina Domingo, ABS-CBN News
