MANILA — The families of the victims of a multiple vehicle collision on the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) last May 1 have filed civil complaints against bus operator Solid North Inc, its president, and the bus driver on Friday, seeking a total of P130 million in damages.Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon personally accompanied the family members of Philippine Coast Guard personnel Daina Alinas and her husband Jonjon, who both died in the incident, at the Quezon City Hall of Justice. The spouses are survived by their two-year-old son.The P50 million civil suit seeks to address the loss of income, moral and exemplary damages caused by the bus crash.“Hindi katanggap-tanggap itong nangyaring ito e. Sabi po ng Pangulo alalayan ang mga pamilya hanggang dulo, hanggang makuha nila yung hustisyang dapat nilang makuha,” said Dizon.Dizon likewise joined four other families who filed a civil case for P80 million against the bus line before an Antipolo court.Among those who came to the filing was Jerry Tuazon, the sole survivor from the van that got swept into the vehicle pile-up.He lost his wife, only child, and several of his churchmates to the incident.Dizon vowed to continue exacting accountability to those liable for the road crash.The driver of the bus, who earlier admitted to falling asleep behind the wheel, has been charged with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, physical injuries and damage to property. His license has also been revoked by the Land Transportation Office (LTO).As for Solid North, its operations remain suspended nationwide.“Chineck na natin, may mga buses sila na hindi pumasa sa roadworthiness checks. Sa pagkakaalam ko 15 yun, hindi pwedeng bumiyahe. Tuloy ang suspension lalo na doon sa ruta. And naghi-hearing ngayon ang LTFRB (Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board) pero ang sinabi ko kay Chairman (Teofilo) Guadiz, bilisan kasi nga we need swift action,” said Dizon.Dizon said the DOTr will also be laying down several road safety reforms to prevent similar incidents from happening again.“Ang utos po ng pangulo, repasuhin natin at baguhin po natin lahat ng mga regulasyon na talagang nag-cause dito sa crash na ‘to. Kasi lahat naman ‘to preventable naman e kung tama yung ginagawa ng bus company, ng driver. Una na niyang pinataas ang insurance ng coverage ng mga PUV (public utility vehicle), kasama ang mga bus para ipantay sa private vehicle. Ginagawa na po natin yan ngayon,” he added.
