MANILA — Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Monday said he would seek permission from the International Criminal Court for former president Rodrigo Duterte to take his oath of office while in detention in the Netherlands.

Duterte, who is facing a crimes against humanity case at the ICC, won his election campaign for mayor of Davao City, his family’s stronghold.

“We recognize the victory of former president PRRD. Siya ang dineklara ng Comelec na mayor. Na-proclaim siya, a day after the elections, an overwhelming mandate,” Remulla said.

“Ang gagawin ko nalang ay magpapaalam ako sa  ICC kung pwede pumunta ang consul natin, para makapag-oath siya,” he added.

Duterte may have to be an “absentee mayor,” his daughter Vice President Sara Duterte earlier said.

Under the Local Government Code, a vice mayor exercises the powers and functions of a mayor in case of temporary or permanent vacancy.

Duterte’s son Sebastian clinched Davao City’s vice mayoralty post.
