MANILA — Barangay tanods and other community security personnel are being trained to help increase the visibility of patrolmen in communities, the Philippine National Police said Tuesday.

The PNP has about 21,200 personnel patrolling Metro Manila since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the police to increase their visibility to deter crimes in the capital region.

“Nagpapatraining po tayo para updated sila sa mga bagong batas na dapat nating ipatupad, ganoon din po sa handcuffing techniques, defense tactics, tinuturuan natin sila… para kaya nila ipagtanggol ang sarili nila at kaya nila imaximize 'yung kanilang capabilities bilang barangay security force or tanod,” she told state television PTV.

Security guards are also being tapped to help report crimes, while the NCRPO’s administrative personnel were also given a 2-hour patrol duty on top of their office tasks, she said.

The intensified patrols in communities are part of the administration’s recalibrated response to the public’s clamor for improved services from the government.
