President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has picked PMGen. Nicolas Torre III as the next head of the Philippine National Police, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin announced Thursday. Torre will replace PGen. Rommel Marbil whose extended term was supposed to end on June 7. He is the first head of the PNP to come from the Philippine National Police Academy being a graduate of Class 1993. Torre led recent high-profile cases, including the search for and eventual arrest of televangelist Apollo Quiboloy in Davao City, prior to his promotion as Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) chief. As CIDG chief, Torre also served the warrant of arrest to former President Rodrigo Duterte. Bersamin did not disclose details as to why the president picked Torre, noting that the “considerations that weighed in the choice of General Torre should be respected.” “The appointment of elements or the officers of the PNP, they have to be kept confidential. We should respect that confidentiality, but it’s the President’s discretion which I consider to be absolute,” he stated in a Palace press briefing Thursday, May 29. “No one can question the use of that discretion, call it ‘inscrutable’,” Bersamin added. However, when asked whether the major general’s leadership during the arrests of Quiboloy and Duterte were considered for his appointment, the Palace official noted that he is not discounting Torre&#x27;s performance. “Hindi ko masasabi iyan dahil alam mo si Presidente always demands performance. Kahit na ano iyong pinagawa sa iyo, you must exhibit high degree level of performance, so maybe that is one. I am not going to discount that, but there may be other qualities of General Torre that he might have considered in comparison to the qualities of those others who were not given this responsibility,” he explained. The turnover of command ceremony will be held on June 2, according to Bersamin. Torre has earned his stripes leading the Quezon City Police District, Davao region police, Western Samar Provincial Police Office, as well as Batangas City and Mabalacat police stations. He also has experience in intelligence and field operations, including stints in the Central Luzon and MIMAROPA police. Torre is expected to serve until March 11, 2027 when he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 56.
