MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the Department of Transportation to investigate the procurement and installation of safety bollards at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport following a vehicle crash that killed two people over the weekend.

Several individuals have pointed out how the bollards failed to prevent the SUV from ramming into the people lining up at the airport.

In a Palace briefing, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said that the bollards were installed in 2019, under the stint of then Transportation Secretary Art. Tugade

Marcos earlier ordered a “crackdown on unsafe and exploitative practices in the transport sector” as he lamented the deaths of several Filipinos in recent vehicular accidents.

He also instructed transportation agencies to conduct a “nationwide audit of bus operators, with clear sanctions for those who fail to comply with safety and maintenance standards.”

CONGRESSIONAL INQUIRY

Meanwhile, a solon said that the recent deadly vehicle crashes warrant a congressional inquiry.

Before the crash at the NAIA Terminal 1 Departure Area on Sunday, there was a multi-vehicle collision at the Subic-Clark Tarlac Expressway on May 1 that led to several deaths.

"I think with the amount of tragedy and accidents that we have experienced for these past few days lang, I think it warrants congressional inquiry on how we can propose a comprehensive traffic regulation and policies para ma-ensure natin na ma-lessen ‘yung road accident na nangyayari," said House Assistant Majority Leader and Lanao del Sur 1st District Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong.

House Assistant Minority Leader and Gabriela Party List Rep. Arlene Brosas, meanwhile, is also calling for an investigation into the crash at NAIA Terminal 1.

"Mababaw ang bollard, pero malalim ang issue ng corruption," she said.
