<div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/17465274576041746527456332.jpeg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Authorities at the scene after a deadly car crash at the NAIA Terminal 1, May 4, 2025. <em>Agatha Gregorio, ABS-CBN News </em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — The driver of a sports utility vehicle that crashed into a bollard at the entrance of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, which resulted in the death of two individuals, tested negative for drugs and alcohol, the Aviation Police said Tuesday. </p><p>This means the 47-year-old driver was not under influence of any substance when the incident happened at NAIA Terminal 1, <span style="background-color:transparent">Aviation Security Unit-National Capital Region Chief Col. Cesar Lumiwes told ABS-CBN News. </span></p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/5/5/a-bright-future-lost-naia-car-crash-victim-was-family-breadwinner-1538">A bright future lost: NAIA car crash victim was family breadwinner</a></div><p>The official said the driver dropped off his boss early morning Sunday when things took a turn for the worse. </p><p>The driver initially said he was rattled by a vehicle which allegedly cut him. But CCTV footage has proven this was not the case. </p><p>“Yun ang kinlear namin especially tinanong kung pwede ba niyang i-recollect ang nangyari. Sabi niya nataranta and parang hindi na niya na-control. Ang inapakan niya ay hindi brake but yung accelerator,” Lumiwes said. </p><p>(That’s what we clarified with him. We asked him for a recollection of the incident. He said he was rattled and wasn’t able to control the vehicle. He stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake.)</p><p>Human error, according to Lumiwes, can happen to anyone especially if they are not in the right condition to drive. The reasons can vary from personal problems, stress and even pressure from security guards or traffic enforcers. </p><p>The incident could have been prevented had the bollard stopped the vehicle from ramming through the entrance’s pathway. </p><p>“Hindi niya na-contain yung impact which is ang purpose talaga nun is for vehicle improvised implosive device, yun ang purpose nun. Ngayon hindi pala siya strong enough. Siguro yun ang palalakasin, lalakihan so it can withstand para kung may ganitong insidente, it will serve its purpose,” Lumiwes said. </p><p>(It wasn’t able to absorb the impact which is really the purpose of such structure. It wasn’t strong enough. Authorities said that he holds a professional driver’s license. Aside from being a company driver, he has also worked as a driver overseas. </p><p>He faces charges of two counts of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries and damage to property.
