MANILA - President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. sought the support of the members of the diplomatic corps anew for the country’s bid for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council during the annual Independence Day vin d’honneur at the Malacanang Palace Thursday, June 12.

This, as the president extended gratitude to envoys for working with the Philippine Government and strengthening bilateral ties in key areas of mutual interest.

“As I have previously shared, the Philippines is running for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council for the term of 2027 to 2028. We just finished an election and I cannot stop campaigning,” Marcos Jr. stated in his remarks.

“Our candidature is anchored in our country's legacy in multilateralism as evidenced by our history of forging cooperation and seeking peace. We earnestly hope to receive the support of your respective governments in that field,” he added.

PH AS ‘ECONOMIC STANDOUT’

Marcos Jr. also touted before the diplomatic corps some economic achievement and aspirations of his administration.

It includes the country’s 5.4% gross domestic product growth in the first quarter of the year which he cited as “among the fastest in the ASEAN region despite rising global volatilities.”

“We are confident that we will achieve the 6% GDP growth target in the coming quarters driven by a steady fiscal consolidation, easing inflation, and progress in trade negotiations with key partners amongst other initiatives,” the president added.

“Truly, the Philippines has become an economic standout in the region owing to our demographic dividend that is young, future-ready, tech-savvy, fast-expanding digital economy, and business-friendly reforms,” he further noted.

“Our engagements with the world are geared towards building peace and cooperation and to foster enduring partnerships. We build bridges, not walls,” he stated.

Marcos Jr. also hailed several legislations passed to boost investment confidence in the country as well as the country’s exit from the Financial Action Task Force in Grey list in February.

He also expressed hope for an active collaboration with member-states as the Philippines prepares for in chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations next year.

Marcos Jr. ended his remarks by offering a toast to “everyone's very good health and long life”.

Vice Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Mohammed Rida El Fassi meanwhile reaffirmed friendship and harmonious collaboration with the Philippines.

“Together, we pursue lasting peace rooted in goodwill, nurtured through sincere dialogue, and strengthened by mutual respect,” he said in his remarks before offering a toast.

He also recognized the goodwill of Filipinos and the conduct of the 2025 midterm elections.

“Just a month ago today, the country conducted its midterm elections, a testament to the strength and vibrancy of its government,” the diplomat noted.
