MANILA — House Speaker Martin Romualdez on Monday called on law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the killing of a House committee official and ensure that perpetrators are identified and prosecuted.

Romualdez said he was “deeply saddened and outraged” by the fatal shooting of House Committee Ways and Means technical staff chief Mauricio “Morrie” Pulhin.

"We call on the Philippine National Police (PNP), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and all law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial, and swift investigation. All angles must be pursued—including, but not limited to, his professional affiliations—so that the truth may come out and justice may be served," the House Speaker said in a statement.

“This crime must not go unanswered. Justice must prevail,” Romualdez stressed.

The House Speaker extended his condolences to Pulhin’s family and the House Secretariat.

“Director Pulhin was a long-serving and dedicated public servant. His professionalism, integrity, and quiet commitment to his work earned him the respect of his peers and superiors alike. We condemn this brutal act of violence in the strongest possible terms,” he said.

House Committee on Ways and Means chairperson Rep. Joey Salceda also condemned Pulhin’s killing.

“Director Pulhin’s murder was shocking in its brazenness. He was shot in front of his family, in his gated neighborhood. This heinous act must be condemned and its perpetrators brought to justice at once,” Salceda said.

Pulhin, 63, “was shot around 2:55 PM during his daughter’s birthday celebration in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City," the Quezon City Police District said on Sunday.

He was rushed to the hospital, but was later declared dead.

Initial investigation revealed that two unidentified suspects entered the venue, shot the victim at close range, and fled on a motorcycle.

They also fired at the subdivision’s security guard before escaping. Police said all leads were actively being pursued.
