DSWD to begin Supplemental Feeding Program to 1.5 million Filipino preschoolers

<p>MANILA — The Department of Social Welfare and Development is set to begin this month its Supplemental Feeding Program for 1.5 million Filipino preschoolers, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian announced Tuesday.</p><p>The program, which provides food to children in child development centers and supervised neighborhood play, aims to improve and maintain the nutritional status of children aged 2-5 for 120 days, according to the DSWD.</p><p>“Ang instruction ng Pangulo ay siguraduhin na may sapat na nutrisyon at pagkain ang ating mga kabataan na naka-enroll sa mga child development centers natin, kahapon nabanggit niya po iyon. Para sa 2025, magsisimula na po ang supplemental feeding program. Ang nakalaan na pondo ho diyan ay halos 5.1 billion, kulang-kulang 1.5 million na mga naka-enroll sa mga child development center ang makakatanggap ng araw-araw na pagkain for a 120 days. These are hot meals na pini-prepare sa mga centers mismo or sa mga local government units,” Gatchalian said.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/6/16/dswd-over-2-9-million-indigent-seniors-receive-1st-2nd-quarter-pensions-1938">DSWD: Over 2.9 million indigent seniors receive 1st, 2nd quarter pensions</a></div><p>The cost of hot meals will be increased from P15 to P25 per meal to ensure that children receive proper nutrition, Gatchalian said.</p><p>“On top of that, iyong mga undernourished na mga kabataan, makakatanggap ng fresh milk – that’s around 22 pesos per undernourished child,” he added.</p><p>The official said that aside from the children, the program also benefits local farmers from which the food will be sourced. </p><p>“Babalikan ko iyong instruction ng ating Pangulo na dapat sa ganitong programa ang nakikinabang ay iyong mga magsasaka rin or iyong mga small agri coops sa lugar na iyon kaya nga we always encourage them to do community procurement o use the Sagip Saka Law wherein napa-prioritize sa procurement process iyong mga magsasaka natin at iyong agriculture coops natin,” he said. </p><p>“Ang assurance namin sa inyo, sumusunod kami doon sa alituntunin ng National Nutrition Council hinggil sa ano dapat iyong pinapakain sa mga hot meals natin, ano iyong sini-serve na hot meals,&quot; he added.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/2024/10/22/what-s-inside-dswd-family-food-packs-740">What’s inside DSWD family food packs</a></div>
