MANILA (UPDATE) — Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla on Wednesday confirmed receiving reports that the asylum application of former Duterte presidential spokesperson Harry Roque was denied by the Netherlands.

Remulla also noted that the denial prompted Roque to turn to the government of Germany for his asylum application. The Justice chief, however, emphasized that the cancellation of Roque’s passport before the Angeles City Regional Trial Court is ongoing.

The DOJ has requested the cancellation of Roque’s passport so he can face his qualified human trafficking case in connection with illegal POGOs.

REMULLA 'FAKE NEWS'

But in a statement, Roque said Remulla's report about the status of his asylum application was "fake news."

"I am not surprised that the Marcos Jr. administration, through the Department of Justice, has become the purveyor of fake news. Strike two na ang DOJ Secretary. Una, sinabi niya mayroon daw akong multiple passports. Ngayon, denied asylum. Ano ito? Nakalap ang impormasyon sa usapang Maritess," Roque said in a statement.

He added that his trip to Germany was "pre-planned" and was not related to his asylum bid in Netherlands.

"My trip to Germany was a pre-planned activity... I am now back at the Hague in the Netherlands," Roque said.

Remulla noted that while Roque is applying for asylum in European Union countries, he can freely move around within the area.

Roque had denied that he was involved with a POGO and accused the government of political harassment.
