MANILA - Five airport policemen were ordered relieved from their posts over an alleged extortion scheme that forces taxi drivers to overcharge their passengers, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said Thursday. The policemen reportedly ran a 60/40 extortion scheme in which taxi drivers are forced to surrender a portion of their earnings. The drivers, in turn, overcharge passengers at the airport to make up for their loss, the DOTr said in a press statement. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon ordered the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to investigate the modus operandi.“Paulit-ulit na sinasabi ng Pangulo na dapat hindi natin pinapahirapan ang mga kababayan natin,” Secretary Dizon said. “Ipapasuspende na natin itong mga ito. Sila ang nagiimpose ng mahal na rate at dun sa mamahaling rate na yun kumukuha sila ng 40-percent kaya ang naghihirap yung mga pasahero natin,” said Dizon.“Pagka hindi ka sumunod at nagcharge ka ng mababa at hindi nagremit nung hinihingi nila, either huhulihin ka o hindi ka papapasukin ng airport.”This would affect the country’s tourism, said Dizon.“Malaki ang epekto nito sa turismo natin,” he said.
