EDSA and C-5 logged the most number of road crashes in Metro Manila in 2024, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said Friday.

MMDA Chairman Don Artes said data from the Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System (MMARAS) showed there is an estimated 4,450 road traffic fatalities over the past decade, with an average of 445 deaths per year from 2013 to 2023.

During this period, there were 1,011,786 reported road crashes in the region, 81% of which were property damage, 19% led to non-fatal injuries, and 0.44% resulted in fatalities.

“Based on our data collection, lumalabas na sa EDSA at C-5 ang pinakamaraming aksidente sa Metro Manila,” Artes told DZMM.

The MMDA official cited several possible reasons for the higher number of road crashes in the 2 main highways including road diggings, narrower lanes on EDSA, and even driver behavior.

One reason why government is pushing for the P8.7 billion EDSA rehabilitation project is to fix roads that have been damaged due to diggings and floods.

“Lubak lubak na kaya dapat i-rehab,” he said, adding that installation of water pipes and fiber optic cables contribute to rough road conditions.

The condition of vehicles can also contribute to road accidents, he said. "Kapag naaaksidente lagi sinasabi nawalan ng preno. Ito ang common excuse...Kailangan well maintained ang sasakyan," he said.

Artes confirmed Commonwealth Avenue is a little safer for motorists “kasi dire-diretso siya, straight lang at maluwag siya.”

In comparison, he said EDSA has slightly narrower lanes due to the installation of bike lanes and the EDSA Bus Lane.

“Naging mas makipot. Nabawasan ang laki ng lanes. Within standards pero hindi na maluwag na maluwag,” he said.

National government agencies, local government units, academe, civil society organizations, motorcycle rider groups, private sector, and transport groups recently joined a one-day summit to work on the Metro Manila Road Safety Action Plan (MMRSAP) 2024–2028, a comprehensive, multi-stakeholder approach to improving road safety across the metropolis.

The MMRSAP focuses on five pillars, namely: road safety management, safer roads, safer vehicle, safer road users, and post-crash response.
