Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News/file</div>MANILA - The Philippine government is stepping up its campaign for disaster preparedness and resilience ahead of the National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) this July. This year’s theme is “KUMIKILOS”, an acronym that stands for Kayang Umaksyon ng Mamamayan na Isabuhay ang Kahandaan ng bawat Isa para maging Ligtas sa Oras ng Sakuna. &quot;So, ang ating pagdiriwang ng National Disaster Resilience Month ay isang pamamaraan upang ipaalala sa lahat ang kahalagahan ng paghahanda sa mga sakuna na maaaring tumama sa ating bansa ‘no, maging bagyo, pagbaha, paglindol, landslide, tsunami at iba pa,&quot; Civil Defense spokesperson Director Chris Noel Bendijo during an interview with Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon. &quot;So, ito rin po ay nagkakaroon tayo ng pagkakataon upang makakalap ng impormasyon at ma-assess natin ang ating mga sarili, ang ating mga kabahayan, ang ating mga opisina kung tayo ba ay handa na pagdating sa pagtugon sa sakuna,&quot; he added. Among the planned activities include the showing of educational videos under Panatag Pilipinas campaign which aim to inform the public on what to do during emergencies like floods and earthquakes. Bendijo said there&#x27;s a growing interest among citizens in learning disaster response. Despite this progress, Bendijo admitted there is still work to be done. &quot;Nandiyan na po iyong pagsunod natin sa Building Code, Structural Code of the Philippines, iyong ating mga konstruksyon. Nandiyan na po iyong pagpaplano sa ating mga pamilya kung ano ang mga dapat gawin sa panahon ng sakuna under sa iba’t ibang mga posibleng scenarios at pagkakataon, at marami pa pong ibang aspeto ng paghahanda,&quot; he said. He emphasized crucial role of local governments and barangays, whose contingency plans must be tailored to the specific risks in their areas. &quot;Tandaan natin, sila iyong mga kasama natin sa ating mga komunidad at sila ang pinakamalapit na maaaring hingan ng saklolo ‘no. Ang bawat LGU sa ating bansa ay may kaniya-kaniyang contingency plan dahil iba’t iba naman po ang mga sakunang tumatama dito,&quot; he said.
