Photo courtesy of Raoul Esperas"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Airport authorities are currently investigating the 56-year-old driver, who hails from Zamboanga. <em>Photo courtesy of Raoul Esperas</em> </span></span></span></div><p>MANILA (<strong>UPDATED</strong>) – A van on Friday accidentally entered the passenger loading area at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 on Friday, airport authorities said. </p><p>Based on a report obtained by ABS-CBN News, the van entered the passenger loading area around 9:45 p.m. No one was injured in the incident. </p><p>The Airport Police Department (APD) said the van entered between Bay 13 and Bay 14. Authorities are currently investigating the 56-year-old driver, who hails from Zamboanga, based on his license. </p><p>In a statement, the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) said the driver told authorities he was trying to avoid another vehicle. </p><p>NNIC added that airport security and the police quickly responded and removed the van. It was then escorted to the APD for documentation.</p><p>“The area where the vehicle struck the curb does not have bollards, as Bays 13 and 14 are not high-traffic zones and have not been assessed as posing significant safety or security risks,” the NNIC statement read. </p><p>NNIC noted that the absence of bollards “is consistent with current airport design standards.”</p><p>“The bollards currently in place across NAIA were installed in 2019, prior to NNIC assuming operations in September 2024,” the firm said. </p><div><br/></div><div><strong>SAFETY MEASURES</strong></div><p>The NNIC said the areas were included in the full audit of bollard placements across terminals in NAIA which has since then been completed. </p><p>“The company is now implementing improvements to ensure existing bollards are properly installed and securely anchored, while also adding new ones in key areas,” according to the release. </p><p>The firm also said it is working with authorities to boost airport safety measures. </p><p>Meanwhile, MIAA General Manager Eric Ines in a phone interview said he is saddened by the incident. </p><p>Although no one was injured, he said he instructed airport police to investigate the incident thoroughly and issue citation tickets, as well as  coordinate with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) for further sanction. </p><p>An SUV earlier crashed into the NAIA Terminal 1 Departure Area on the morning of May 4, 2025, leaving two people dead.</p><p>The SUV driver claimed he started his vehicle after dropping off a passenger when a sedan passed in front of him. This supposedly caused the suspect to forget to transfer his foot to the brake pedal, leading to the crash, but airport CCTV showed otherwise.</p><p>On May 27, Leo Gonzales was formally charged with reckless imprudence resulting in two counts of homicide, multiple physical injuries, and damage to property.
